What is a putter insert?

The putter rulebook has always allowed the impact area of the putter to be a different material to the rest of the putter body.  Most putters are metal, but not everybody wants metal contacting the ball, hence club designers started changing the face of the putter to a non-metal or soft metal solution to aid feel, response and repair. At PutterParts, we strive to offer material solutions including higher technology materials like carbon fiber used in motorsports and aerospace.

Why should you consider buying a new putter insert?

Accepted Answer

Over time, the putter face can become damaged or aged, leading to a drop in performance. Replacing the putter insert can rejuvenate your club, offering a chance for customization or improvement over factory-installed options. It's also a sustainable choice, preventing the need to discard the entire putter just because the insert needs replacement.

Why do I need to bother sending a picture of the putter?

There are many names and model re-releases and 100's of insert designs and shapes. For instance, there is a New Odyssey Tri Hot and an older version, both with the same name.  Therefore,  a picture sent to support@putterparts.com confirms which putter variant you have and the right insert shape can be shipped to you.

Which material is best for my putter insert?

Choosing the right material depends on your preferences for feel, acoustics, response, and weight. Metals offer the most response but are heavier. Non-metals are softer but can provide a pronounced response, like smooth gloss twill carbon fiber. Aircraft Aluminum and Tellurium Copper are soft metals, but copper is three times denser, making it three times heavier.

Why is copper the most expensive material?

Accepted Answer

Copper is a soft metal, but it's tough on tools and requires extra time to machine. Tooling needs more frequent replacement, and the machining process is slower, contributing to its higher cost.

How many variants of putter insert are there?

Accepted Answer

Hundreds per brand. When we started, wet thought there were a few.  After a decade of making parts for Odyssey, TaylorMade and Ping, we can say one size does not fit all.

Why different materials for putter inserts?

Accepted Answer

Materials vary with respect to what you want to accomplish.
Copper is so soft metal that adds weight with deep acoustics.
Aircraft Aluminum is a lighter, soft metal
Smooth gloss twill carbon fiber is one of the lightest and most responsive materials
Carbon fiber fusion the softest material, especially with horizontal grooves

Do you design more than inserts?

Yes we do. We have designed heads, hosels, alignment aids, ballmarkers and more.  Many have NDA's where we can't discuss further, but if you have a dream or idea to make a reality, we can definitely talk and come up with a quote.

Why use epoxy to affix inserts?

Accepted Answer

We want the insert face and putter body to act as one.  Other methods like tape create a barrier between the putter head and impact face. This can affect feel, consistency and durability.  Many parts on airplanes or high performance cars are bonded together with epoxy, not tape.

Why is it challenging to replace the insert on an Odyssey Dual Force putter?

Accepted Answer

Replacing the insert on an Odyssey Dual Force putter is challenging due to several factors: the stock stronomic material is tough to remove and won't boil out, the pockets aren't machined surfaces, making new insert fitment difficult, and the inserts usually contain loft, adding to the manufacturing complexity.

Why isn't 3M double-sided tape recommended to affix inserts by PUTTERPARTS?

Accepted Answer

While many manufacturers use 3M VHB tape to affix stock inserts, it can create a "spongy" layer between the ball impact surface and the putter head. A more optimal design is for the putter head and face to act as one. Using epoxy to bond the insert to the head provides a more robust and consistent feel.

Why is PutterParts biased toward big brands like Odyssey, TaylorMade, Ping, etc?

The business of putter inserts works best in numbers.
It's a loss to design and make just one insert.  Selling multiple inserts of the same design is how we have stayed in business for more than a decade.
Small brand are possible, but less common and the price has to be higher.

What insert is closest to the original?

Accepted Answer

Carbon Fiber Fusion is most like the original but with the added benefits of durability and the carbon being self dampening.

Why doesn't PUTTERPARTS release a carbon or stainless steel insert?

Accepted Answer

We have experimented with steel inserts. Our finding match history: A softer metal or a material that is softer than metal operates most optimally in the putter head. There have been successful steel putters used to win a lot of tournaments, but the insert putter appears to be king in the modern day.  Steel's stiffness and hardness is much higher than aircraft aluminum or steel.
Our carbon fiber fusion with horizontal grooves suits the golfer that seeks a return to a non-metal insert feel, but with a more desirable response than what is released from a high volume factory.

Question 16

Why don't the OEMS just do the same thing as PUTTERPARTS?

Accepted Answer

OEMs are high volume production in a short space of time.  They design solutions that are quick and easy to install on a mass scale and for higher profit.  Our solutions are more bespoke, have a variety of materials and finishes and can optimize the feel of your putts. 
Are you needing more response, but want to remain non-metal?  Carbon fiber fusion?
Does your putter have lead tape on it?  Take it off and install a copper insert.
Do you want milled micro grooves like the new Mizuno?  We can put that in your TaylorMade, Odyssey or PING.

Question 17

Why should I optimize or repair instead of buying a new putter?

Accepted Answer

When we started more than a decade ago, Odyssey's were about $70 new.  Now some are pushing $400 or more.  This is a huge investment and is it worth it?  The putter is the club we use most.  A switch has to be calculated and it can be devastating if you trade in your favorite club only for the new one to not work out.  For example, The Odyssey White Hot 2-ball original is a classic 17-4 stainless steel head design, which Padraig Harrington used to win the Open more than once.  Optimizing one with a new face and discs is not only more cost effective than a new putter, but more personal for your game's needs.

We decided to change our name/brand to something more relevant.  We started with an obscure name to be under the radar.  Would this be successful? Would customers like our parts? Would we survive?  Yes, Yes, and Yes. It's PutterParts to infinity and beyond!
