The putter rulebook has always allowed the impact area of the putter to be a different material to the rest of the putter body. Most putters are metal, but not everybody wants metal contacting the ball, hence club designers started changing the face of the putter to a non-metal or soft metal solution to aid feel, response and repair. At PutterParts, we strive to offer material solutions including higher technology materials like carbon fiber used in motorsports and aerospace.
Over time, the putter face can become damaged or aged, leading to a drop in performance. Replacing the putter insert can rejuvenate your club, offering a chance for customization or improvement over factory-installed options. It's also a sustainable choice, preventing the need to discard the entire putter just because the insert needs replacement.
There are many names and model re-releases and 100's of insert designs and shapes. For instance, there is a New Odyssey Tri Hot and an older version, both with the same name. Therefore, a picture sent to support@putterparts.com confirms which putter variant you have and the right insert shape can be shipped to you.
Choosing the right material depends on your preferences for feel, acoustics, response, and weight. Metals offer the most response but are heavier. Non-metals are softer but can provide a pronounced response, like smooth gloss twill carbon fiber. Aircraft Aluminum and Tellurium Copper are soft metals, but copper is three times denser, making it three times heavier.

Replacing the insert on an Odyssey Dual Force putter is challenging due to several factors: the stock stronomic material is tough to remove and won't boil out, the pockets aren't machined surfaces, making new insert fitment difficult, and the inserts usually contain loft, adding to the manufacturing complexity.
While many manufacturers use 3M VHB tape to affix stock inserts, it can create a "spongy" layer between the ball impact surface and the putter head. A more optimal design is for the putter head and face to act as one. Using epoxy to bond the insert to the head provides a more robust and consistent feel.
We have experimented with steel inserts. Our finding match history: A softer metal or a material that is softer than metal operates most optimally in the putter head. There have been successful steel putters used to win a lot of tournaments, but the insert putter appears to be king in the modern day. Steel's stiffness and hardness is much higher than aircraft aluminum or steel.
Our carbon fiber fusion with horizontal grooves suits the golfer that seeks a return to a non-metal insert feel, but with a more desirable response than what is released from a high volume factory.

When we started more than a decade ago, Odyssey's were about $70 new. Now some are pushing $400 or more. This is a huge investment and is it worth it? The putter is the club we use most. A switch has to be calculated and it can be devastating if you trade in your favorite club only for the new one to not work out. For example, The Odyssey White Hot 2-ball original is a classic 17-4 stainless steel head design, which Padraig Harrington used to win the Open more than once. Optimizing one with a new face and discs is not only more cost effective than a new putter, but more personal for your game's needs.
